To maintain and improve the quality of life for Urbana citizens by providing programs of economic development, housing, planning, zoning enforcement, and building safety code enforcement.

Major Activities of the Community Development Department:

  • Plan and implement department goals, plans, standards and policies
  • Manage resources for efficient achievement of City and department goals and objectives
  • Develop department staff through training and evaluation procedures
  • Manage personnel through work directives and rules
  • Represent the department and City in various intergovernmental activities, in matters with the news-media and at public relations meetings and events
  • Participate in the planning and preparation of the City's capital improvements long-term plan and budget

May is National Bike Month, and we’re kicking off the festivities with Bike to Work Day on May 2nd. Biking to work is fun and easy, especially in Urbana. All you really need is a working bike and you’re good to go. (Some advance route planning helps, too. Tree-lined residential streets are a lot more fun than riding down University Avenue!)

Angie Armstrong has had a longtime dream of owning a women’s fashion store. On April 1, after two months of do-it-yourself remodeling work, that dream became a reality with the opening of the bluebird boutique at 212 W. Green St., Urbana. Three weeks later, the Urbana native is still giddy at having her own business.
