New Development For Downtown Urbana

Date:
October 23, 2018 - 6:30pm

The City of Urbana and Green Street Realty have entered into a Letter Of Intent for the redevelopment of the 200 block of South Vine Street in Downtown Urbana.

Mayor Diane Marlin noted that this project will be the first new residential construction in downtown Urbana since 2005, when the Stratford Residences were built.

“The new development at 200 S. Vine St. will add much-needed housing options in the heart of our city for families, empty-nesters, professionals, and students,” Marlin said. “Our downtown is well-suited to support more residential development, with grocery stores, restaurants, drug stores, fitness studios, schools, mass transit routes, and essential services within easy walking distance. It’s also very close to major employment centers such as the University of Illinois campus, Carle Foundation Hospital, and Champaign County government offices.”

Retirement Announced

Date:
October 26, 2018 - 5:00pm

Mayor Diane Marlin announced that William Gray, P.E., will retire as Urbana Public Works Director after 26 years of service to the community. His last day in the office will be October 26 and he will officially retire on October 31, 2018. A celebration of his career is being planned for late October.

“We are grateful for Bill Gray’s tremendous contributions to our community and beyond,” Marlin said. “We will greatly miss his steady hand and unmatched institutional knowledge and expertise. Under his leadership, the City of Urbana has distinguished itself as a leader in sustainability, infrastructure, multi-modal transportation design, operations, urban forestry, and intergovernmental cooperation. We wish Bill and Kathy Gray the very best.”

Mayor Marlin also announced that City Administrator Carol Mitten will serve a dual role as Interim Public Works Director while a nationwide search is conducted to fill the vacancy.
