Multifamily Recycling Program
The City of Urbana’s multifamily recycling program was implemented in August 1999. The multifamily recycling program includes all apartment buildings, dormitories, fraternities/sororities, rooming houses and condominiums containing five or more dwelling units.
The multifamily program serves an estimated 19,000 residents in the City of Urbana. All multifamily housing is required to have on-site recycling carts. Participation by building tenants is voluntary.
Materials are collected in a single-stream program where both paper fibers and containers may be deposited into the green 95-gallon recycling carts. Check the decal on the top lid of the cart for a list of acceptable materials. Materials are collected weekly.
This program is also funded by a mandatory recycling tax. Fees include an apartment fee of $3.10 per unit per month, and a dormitory (rooming houses, fraternity/sorority) fee of $2.40 per month times the legal number of occupants.
