To maintain and improve the quality of life for Urbana citizens by providing programs of economic development, housing, planning, zoning enforcement, and building safety code enforcement.

Major Activities of the Community Development Department:

  • Plan and implement department goals, plans, standards and policies
  • Manage resources for efficient achievement of City and department goals and objectives
  • Develop department staff through training and evaluation procedures
  • Manage personnel through work directives and rules
  • Represent the department and City in various intergovernmental activities, in matters with the news-media and at public relations meetings and events
  • Participate in the planning and preparation of the City's capital improvements long-term plan and budget

The Urbana Business Association's Market IN the Square will start kick-off its eight-week season this Saturday, November 11th at Lincoln Square in Downtown Urbana. The Market runs from now through the Christmas Holiday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday. The market offers farm-fresh produce, honey, flowers, arts and crafts, and more. Support local growers, makers, and businesses this holiday season.

The City of Urbana recently launched a new online system for managing building permits, code enforcement, and other request tracking. Using a cloud-based program called Citizenserve, many of the City’s Building Safety-related applications, requests for payment, and customer request forms, are now available online. In addition, Citizenserve will now provide the capability to accept both tenant and neighborhood complaints online.

The Urbana Art Expo is a one-day juried fine art exhibition and sale, presented by the Urbana Public Arts Program in collaboration with 40 North. The event is free and open to the public, so come out, invite your friends, and show your support for local art!

International Walk to School Day is a global event celebrated in more than 40 countries by walking and biking to school on the same day. Started in 1997 as an one-day event, it has evolved to be part of year-round safe routes to school movement, and an encouragement to a healthy life choice.
