To maintain and improve the quality of life for Urbana citizens by providing programs of economic development, housing, planning, zoning enforcement, and building safety code enforcement.

Major Activities of the Community Development Department:

  • Plan and implement department goals, plans, standards and policies
  • Manage resources for efficient achievement of City and department goals and objectives
  • Develop department staff through training and evaluation procedures
  • Manage personnel through work directives and rules
  • Represent the department and City in various intergovernmental activities, in matters with the news-media and at public relations meetings and events
  • Participate in the planning and preparation of the City's capital improvements long-term plan and budget

The City of Urbana is pleased to announce that the Illinois Housing Development Authority awarded TWG Development, LLC, in partnership with the City of Urbana, low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC) for Aspen Court. Since 2011, the City has been working to identify a developer to redevelop this property into decent, safe and sanitary affordable housing. After TWG Development, LLC purchased the property City staff met with TWG and provided information for the LIHTC application to IHDA.

The City of Urbana has completed the draft Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER) documenting programs and activities undertaken through its federally-funded affordable housing and community development programs during the year ending June 30, 2017. The draft CAPER will be available for public review and comment during the period beginning Monday, September 11, 2017 through Tuesday, September 26, 2017. The draft CAPER will be available during regular business hours at the following locations:

The design update of a portion of Bradley Avenue in Urbana is complete. The Bradley Avenue Bike Lane Project, proposed in the 2016 Urbana Bicycle Master Plan, extends west on Bradley Avenue from Lincoln Avenue to the western city limit of Urbana.

It’s still a few months away from opening, but the Broadway Food Hall in downtown Urbana is beginning to take shape. The food hall at 401 N. Broadway Ave. will be the first of its kind in Central Illinois, and will be host to five different restaurants and a small bar, all under one roof.
