Mayor of Urbana: Diane Marlin

Duties are defined by state law for Urbana's mayor-aldermanic form of government.

  • The mayor is the chief executive of the city.
  • The mayor appoints numerous officials and staff including the Police Chief, Fire Chief, Director of Public Works, and Director of Community Development as well as members of city boards and commissions, all with the approval of the city council.
  • Represents the City on intergovernmental boards (e.g., METCAD, Regional Planning Commission, Champaign-Urbana Area Transportation Study)
  • Chairs City Council Meetings
  • Serves as Liquor Commissioner
  • Works with City Council to plan and implement city goals, plans, standards and policies
  • Manages resources for achievement of City goals and objectives
  • Oversees hiring, the regular review of compensation, benefits and working conditions, and the discipline of all City personnel
  • Represents the City in various intergovernmental activities, in matters with the news media and at public relations meetings and events
  • Works with Finance Director to develop the annual budget proposal and administer the approved budget

News Release: January, 2012 The city council has approved placing on the March 20 ballot a question that, if approved by voters, could lead to lower residential electric bills by this summer and could also significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions attributable to the city. Aldermen voted unanimously Dec. 19 to place this question on the ballot: “Shall the City of Urbana have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such a program?”

The Proposed Ward Map was adopted on November 28, 2011.Every ten years (after the federal census) the City is required to re-draw the seven council wards to make them roughly equal in population. The changes are shown with the underlying color from the ward from which they were taken with hatch marks in the color of their new ward. The map shows the boundaries of each ward, including precincts and population by census tract.

URBANA – Crime and calls for police service declined significantly last month in a southeast Urbana neighborhood that has been the focus of city attention.Due to a spike in criminal activity, the city instituted stepped up police patrols in late April in an area bounded by Philo Road on the east, Mumford Drive on the south, Cottage Grove Avenue on the west and Colorado Avenue on the north. The area includes a number of apartment buildings, including one at 2017 S. Philo Road that was the site of a Feb. 14 murder.
