"Ride For Their Lives" Campaign Making Stop in Urbana

On Thursday, August 26, 2010, Ed Smart and Ahmad Rivazfar, both parents of child abduction and abuse victims, will travel to Central Illinois by bicycle as part of an awareness and fundraising campaign, Ride For Their Lives, for the Surviving Parents Coalition (SPC) child advocacy initiatives. Rivazfar and Smart will stop at the Lake House at Crystal Lake Park in Urbana at 4 PM to meet guests and share information on how to protect children. From the C-U area, Smart and Rivazfar will ride to Kankakee, IL.


Riders wanting to join Smart and Rivazfar as they come into the C-U area from indianapolis may do so. There will be a meet-up point 60 miles outside the area. Riders may also do the last 10-15 miles with the group - the route is viewable on the ride website.

Artist of the Corridor Reception

The City of Urbana invites the public to an opening of the Artist of the Corridor art exhibit featuring the work of Alexei “Lyosha” Svinarski.  On Tuesday, August 10th, from 3:30 – 4:30pm, a reception will be held in the City Building at 400 S. Vine Street to meet the artist Lyosha and view his exhibition of photographs, entitled “InFocus: Urbana, Illinois”.  Lyosha’s work will be on display until September 30, 2010 and is open to the public. 


The City created an art exhibit space in March 2010 to feature artwork by Urbana artists in the City Building.  The Artist of the Corridor exhibits are displayed for a period of two months.

Contemporary Triptych Music Concert

Contemporary Triptych - New Music Concert featuring pianist Casey Dierlam


On Wednesday, July 28th, at 7:30 – 8:30pm, a piano recital featuring the music of Steven Taylor (faculty at U of I), Jae Eun Jung (Doctoral student at U of I), and Philip Schuessler (resident of Urbana-Champaign community) will take place in the Smith Hall at 805 S. Mathews Avenue in Urbana.

Plastic Fantastic: Earth Friendly Printmaking workshop

The City of Urbana Public Arts Program will host an earth friendly printmaking art workshop on Saturday, July 31st from 8:00 am to noon. The public is invited to investigate the shapes, colors, lines, patterns, and textures of the fruits and veggies found at the Market with artist Traci Pines, as she facilitates a printmaking workshop using reusable materials at Urbana’s Market at the Square.


The City offers “Art at the Market” workshops for all ages on the last Saturday of each month during Urbana’s Market at the Square season. The theme for the 2010 Season is Art and the Environment. Upcoming workshops will take place on the following dates: July 31st, August 28th, September 25th, and October 30th. Look for the City of Urbana tent at the Market on the Square on the corner of Vine Street and Illinois Street in Urbana.
