Urbana Police Department Front Desk Overnight Closure

Starting Monday, December 2, 2013, at 11 pm, the front desk of the Urbana Police Department will be closing during overnight hours. The front desk will remain closed daily from 11 pm – 7 am.

Accordingly, the city building lobby area will be closed and locked to the public. Phones will be available in the three foyers of the city building, and those phones will connect to either a police department employee who happens to be in the building or a METCAD dispatcher, depending on availability.

While the police department does not anticipate any drop-off in the level of service provided to the community, the department does apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Urbana Seeks to Increase Bicycle Safety with Bicycle Enforcement Campaign

The City of Urbana is working hard to make Urbana the most bicycle friendly community in the Midwest.  In 2008, the City adopted a goal to “get Urbana bicycling”. Since then, the City wrote and adopted an award-winning bicycle master plan and began implementing dedicated bicycle infrastructure.  Then, in 2010, Urbana worked with Champaign and the University of Illinois to host a community-wide ‘C-U Bike to Work Day’ to encourage residents to try biking to work or school for one day instead of driving. In 2012, the City supported a staff member in becoming a League of American Bicyclists certified bicycle instructor.

All of these initiatives are working on the “Five E’s” of bicycle friendliness:
