Our mission:  The Urbana Public Works Department promotes growth in the City of Urbana by maintaining, constructing and improving the City's infrastructure.  We preserve the quality of life for the citizens, visitors, businesses and government agencies (both within the City and in the surrounding areas).  Our department strives to provide prompt and courteous service in a professional, efficient and cost-effective manner to safeguard the safety, health and welfare of those we serve.

Department Posts

Two-way traffic will shift to the eastbound lane of East Main Street in Urbana beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Weather permitting, Cross Construction, Inc. will make a repair to the City sanitary sewer main in the westbound lane of East Main Street between Lynn Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. Main Street will remain open to through traffic for the duration of the project and the lane shift will end at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018.

On Saturday, September 22, 2018, Griggs Street between Race Street and Wood Street will be closed from 4:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. for the Urbana Imbibe Rumble in the Ring Event. Parking on this section of Griggs Street will not be available during the event. We appreciate your patience while this event is underway.

Weather permitting; South Mathews Avenue will be closed to thru traffic between West Green Street and West Oregon Street from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 for building maintenance and crane parking done by the University of Illinois Facilities and Services Department. No thru traffic will be permitted on South Mathews Avenue between West Green Street and West Oregon Street during the project.

Mayor Diane Marlin announced that William Gray, P.E., will retire as Urbana Public Works Director after 26 years of service to the community. His last day in the office will be October 26 and he will officially retire on October 31, 2018. A celebration of his career is being planned for late October.

Closed Sealed BIDS for the construction of the 2018 Full Depth Concrete Patching– Part 2 (City Section 18-00612-00-PV) including: 10” Class B Patching; 6” Class C Patching and other incidental work will be received by the City of Urbana at the office of the Director of Public Works, 706 South Glover, Urbana, Illinois 61802 until 1:55 p.m. prevailing time on Friday, September 28, 2018 and publicly opened and read aloud at 2:00 p.m. at said office.
