A serious accident or illness can mean a time of great uncertainty, both in terms of physical and financial health. As a City of Urbana benefits-eligible employee, you automatically receive IMRF coverage for short-term and long-term disabilities. You may add additional disability coverage through MetLife and supplemental medical coverage through Aflac.

IMRF provides two types of disability benefits: temporary and total/permanent. These benefits are automatically provided to you as a benefit of being a City employee; you do not need to enroll. Temporary disability benefits are paid if you are unable to perform the duties of any position which might reasonably be assigned by your current IMRF employer. Temporary disability benefits are effective on the 31st day following the date of disability, if you are no longer receiving salary, sick, or vacation pay from your employer.
Total and permanent disability benefits are paid after temporary disability benefits have expired and if you are unable to engage in any gainful activity for any employer. This benefit is paid after you have exhausted your temporary benefits. To qualify, you must be totally and permanently disabled and unable to engage in any substantial gainful employment.
