UHS Presents: Blithe Spirit

Date: February 14, 2018 - 7:00pm to February 18, 2018 - 2:30pm

UHS PresentationSituational humor, verbal word play, and memorable characters will entertain audiences in Urbana High School’s Cobb Auditorium this week, when students present Blithe Spirit. The show opens Wednesday, February 14, and runs through Sunday, February 18.

“Blithe Spirit is a love story, but a cynical one,” said the show’s director Sara Jones. “It’s sort of an anti-love love story. I really like that it offers an unconventional look at love, while being very funny. It seems appropriate, in an ironic way, that it’s opening on Valentine’s Day.”

The comic play is about a novelist who invites an eccentric medium and clairvoyant to a dinner party at his house, in hopes of gathering material for his next book. The novelist gets much more than he bargained for when the séance conducted by the medium ultimately beckons the ghost of his first wife into the home he now shares with his second wife.

As Jones wrote in her Director’s Note, “Though this play is intended to be not only funny, but often quite silly, its heart is about relationships. It explores both how cruel and wonderful it is to love someone, and how far we’re willing to go to get what we think we want from them.”

Written by Noel Coward, Blithe Spirit first opened in London in 1941 and was adapted for film in 1945. The Urbana High School production features a cast of seven students, supported by a crew of 20. Blithe Spirit will be performed at 7:00 pm Wednesday through Saturday (February 14 –17) and at 2:30 pm on Sunday (February 18). All performances will be in the Urbana High School Cobb Auditorium, 1002 S. Race Street. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, and are available at the box office, which opens 30 minutes prior to each performance.
