Multiple highway projects underway in the Urbana-Champaign area

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that multiple projects in the Champaign-Urbana area are currently underway or starting in August and extending into 2021.

The seven projects represent a total investment of more than $83 million for the region, with $73.5 million coming from Gov. JB Pritzker’s bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program.

“With the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, Illinois isn’t just making temporary repairs and patching up existing infrastructure, it’s investing for the future,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Rebuild Illinois is the beginning of an effort to improve and replace roads and bridges and provide jobs in the Champaign-Urbana area and across the entire state. In the coming months, IDOT will undertake seven projects that will ultimately create safer roads and bridges for the Champaign-Urbana community.”

All seven projects are along the Interstate 74/57 corridor, between Duncan Road and High Cross Road and between Springfield Avenue and Olympian Drive. Four of the seven are ongoing, with two starting later this summer and one slated for May 2021:

Outdoor Seating Accommodations Started

Urbana is entering into Restore Illinois Phase 4 on June 26, 2020!

Therefore, the needs of our downtown Urbana businesses are changing as we move through the stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Restore Illinois plan phases. As a City, we absolutely must be responsive to those needs and assess the use of public space to strike a balance among the different demands from various users of that public space.

Starting today, (6/26), the east half of the public parking Lot 1 at Water Street and Race Street is closed to traffic to allow for outdoor seating. However, the west half of lot 1 will still be available for parking. Remember when using Lot 1, all vehicles should enter the lot from Water Street, and exit through Goose Alley. Until further notice, Goose Alley will become a one-way alley with vehicles to move only east-bound. Please watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vehicles when exiting onto Broadway Avenue.

Further, businesses with parking accessed from Goose Alley should direct their staff and patrons to enter Goose Alley from the Lot 1 entrance on Water Street and to exit Goose Alley onto Broadway Avenue.

The City of Urbana is no longer accepting applications for the Small Business Assistance Program.

Urbana received 37 applications for Small Business Assistance totaling over $321,000. The applications were received June 19 through July 16. The budget for this program was $250,000 in CARES Act funding. The grant review team consisted of staff from Human Resources/Finance, the Executive Department, Economic Development and Grants. The team set priorities for funding as follows: Minority and Women Owned businesses (MWB), businesses with a brick and mortar building in Urbana, businesses retaining the greatest number of employees, and for profit businesses. Funding was limited to for profit businesses as there were other local funds available in the community for nonprofit agencies.

After a review of all applications, 28 were recommended for funding of which 16 were minority owned and 7 women owned businesses.
