Independent Forum on High Speed Internet (UC2B) and the Future of the Community

The ribbon has been cut for UC2B, but much work remains to be done before the digital divide ends in Champaign-Urbana. How will this new digital capacity benefit the community? Money? Programs? Education? Representation? Health? Everyone is needed to join in the process of transforming Champaign-Urbana into a digital community.

Hear from UC2B decision-makers, learn new skills and share your perspectives December 1, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Douglass Annex, 804 North Fifth Street, in Champaign, Illinois, at the forum “High Speed Internet (UC2B): How will the community benefit?” This event is an open, independent event. Citizens and groups in the local area can come to hear about and discuss the current state and future directions of community use of high-speed internet.

UC2B Fiber Optic Network Expansion Opportunity

The Champaign-Urbana community has entered a competition to continue building one of the fastest broadband Internet networks in the country. Anchored by on-going construction of the UC2B network, local leaders are preparing a bid proposal for Champaign-Urbana to be one of six communities nationwide to split $200 million in funding from Gigabit Squared, an economic development firm that specializes in building broadband networks through its collaboration with with Gig. U, the University Community Next Generation Innovation Project.

The six communities selected will receive funding to expand broadband connectivity by building out fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) infrastructure. This would give all homes and businesses in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy the ability to connect to the local ultra-high speed network.

UC2B Community Ambassador Job Application Assistance Workshop

UC2B is Hiring Community Ambassadors


UC2B is the short name for Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband, which is a collaboration between the cities of Urbana and Champaign, the University of Illinois, and several other public and private partners. Together, they received grant funding to build a fiber-optic Internet network that offers fast, high-speed internet access to neighborhoods, businesses, and Community Anchor institutions across Urbana-Champaign.


Urbana Broadband Project Open House

Residents of Urbana will have an opportunity to view exhibits and plans of the UC2B Urbana Broadband project at an informal public open house to be held in the Multi-Purpose Room at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, 1108 West Fairview Avenue, Urbana, Illinois on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.


Participants are asked to park in the north parking lot off Goodwin Avenue and enter through the doors on the northwest side of the building.
