Artist of the Corridor Reception

The City of Urbana invites the public to an opening of the current “Artist of the Corridor” art exhibit featuring the work of Betsem Atiback Benjamin.


On Wednesday, June 16th, from 4:00 – 5:00pm, a reception will be held in the City Building at 400 S. Vine Street to meet the artist Betsem Atiback Benjamin and view his work. Benjamin’s work will be on display until August 2, 2010 and is open to the public.


The City created an art exhibit space in March 2010 to feature artwork by Urbana artists in the City Building. The Artist of the Corridor exhibits are displayed for a period of two months. This program is part of the Urbana Public Arts Program that works to create a city where all residents engage with the arts in its many forms and where artists thrive and are valued.

AQUATOWN, a multi-media performance addressing climate change

Local artist ensemble addresses climate change in an original multi-media performance project.


(Urbana, Illinois) - Change of State Performance Project presents the world premiere of an original multi-media theatre performance exploring the future of climate change in the Midwest: Aquatown: A Future Hydrohistory, funded in part by a City of Urbana Arts Grant.


Where: U-C Independent Media Center 202 S. Broadway Ave. Urbana, Illinois.


Showtimes: June 10th –12th at 8pm June 13th at 7pm.


Tickets: $12 for adults and $6 for youth under 19. There is a $2 discount for seniors and those not arriving by car. Thursday’s show has free admission. Reservations can be made by calling (217) 689-0111.

Public Hearing on Cunningham Township Annual Budget

The Board of Trustees, Cunningham Township, Urbana, Illinois, will hold a public hearing at 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 7, 2010 in the Council Chambers of the Urbana City Building, 400 South Vine Street, Urbana, for the purpose of receiving public comment on the tentative Annual Budget (Fiscal Year 2010-2011).


Persons with disabilities needing special services or accommodations for this hearing should contact the City of Urbana’s Americans with Disabilities Coordinator at 384-2466 or TDY at 384-2447.

“Prism Arc VI” Sculpture Dedication on Philo Road

Urbana invites the public to celebrate the installation of “Prism Arc VI”, the second of four sculptures


The City of Urbana invites the public to attend a ribbon cutting and dedication of the sculpture entitled, Prism Arc VI, on Friday, May 7th, at 4:00 PM.  Prism Arc VI is the second of four sculptures to be installed in Urbana this spring for a two-year placement.  Carl Billingsley, sculptor and Professor of Sculpture at East Carolina University, will be installing the piece on the northeast corner of Philo Road and Colorado Avenue in Urbana as part of the Philo Road Beautification Plan and the Urbana Sculpture Project.  The public is invited to meet the artist and learn more about the piece on site on Friday, at 4:00 PM.

Wide World of Urbana Community Concert, sponsored by City of Urbana Arts Grant

Wide World of Urbana Community Concert (an Urbana Arts Grant recipient), Saturday, May 1st from 4:00 – 7:30PM, at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center at 202 S. Broadway Avenue in Urbana. This event is a 3 part interactive concert with an educational focus presented by the C-U Swedish Folk Ensemble, MEANS New Music Ensemble, and Zach May and the Maps. This event is free and open to the public.


The C-U Swedish Folk Ensemble performing the beautiful and haunting melodies of the Scandinavian fiddle tradition. Performance will include music, history, and a chance to try the traditional dancing!


MEANS New Music Ensemble performing 5 new pieces by young composers from around the world and here in Urbana. Come hear the pieces, meet the composers, and learn about their lives and work.
