Manhole Access

As a community service the City of Urbana is committed to the maintenance and upkeep of our sanitary and storm sewer systems. To do this we clean, televise, chemically and mechanically treat for tree roots and repair any known defects on an ongoing basis. In order for us to perform this type of service it is crucial that we be allowed access to all entry points (manholes) along the public sewer main.

Typically a circle of about 3 foot diameter by 6 foot high centered above the manhole cover shall be maintained as a clear zone. This clear zone allows us proper equipment and personnel access for maintenance and emergency needs.

Please do not locate any items or objects such as the following over or near the City’s manholes:

  • Sod or Grass
  • Woodpiles
  • Sheds or Other Structures
  • Trees or Shrubs
  • Fences
  • Flower Pots
  • Mulch or Landscaping Stones
